Our Story

Where It All Began

Neal and Nettie were both born in the late 1800s in Nacogdoches, Texas.
They lived through times of deep hardship, with little access to education or opportunity. Nettie reached the second grade, and Neal never attended school. Despite this, they were determined to create a better life.
In 1919, they packed up their lives and moved to Boley, Oklahoma with their eight children. There, they would raise six more. It was a bold decision rooted in faith, vision, and hope.

They were also my great-grandparents — and the reason this work carries their names.

Starting over in Boley wasn’t easy—but Neal and Nettie were resourceful. In the rural Rusk community, just 2.5 miles south of town, Neal and one of his sons began running a small grocery operation out of their home—meeting local needs with what they had. Over time, with faith, grit, and family support, they built a permanent grocery store—right on their own land. Their store eventually became the only one in the Rusk community, serving as a vital space for neighbors near and far. Neal and Nettie ran the store together with dignity and purpose. They weren’t just meeting needs—they were building something lasting.
Neal served as a deacon at his church. Nettie was a missionary. Their work extended beyond their store walls—they believed in community care and lifting others up. Their values of compassion, faith and service are woven into everything we do at Neal & Nettie’s today. We honor their legacy not just in name—but in action.

While we’re still learning more about Neal and Nettie’s full story, what we do know is enough to inspire a movement.

Neal & Nettie’s Grocery stands on the foundation they laid—built for those who, like them, deserve more than survival, and whose dignity should never be overlooked.

While our long-term goal is to open a brick-and-mortar grocery store, we’re already bringing that mission to life through culturally relevant cooking classes, community pop-ups, meaningful merchandise, and garden partnerships that keep us connected to the land and each other.

This work is a beginning, not a backup plan — and every effort helps us grow something lasting.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Neal & Nettie’s?
Neal & Nettie’s is an innovative food initiative dedicated to bringing affordable, culturally relevant, and nutritious food to underserved communities. Until we can open a brick-and-mortar grocery store, we are using creative approaches like virtual cooking classes, pop-ups, and community partnerships to make fresh food more accessible.

Culturally relevant means our recipes reflect the food traditions, ingredients and everyday experiences of the communities we serve- with care for both heritage and health.

We honor familiar meals with ingredients like greens, legumes, grains, and spices, while also being mindful of health concerns that are more common in certain communities — like high blood pressure, diabetes, fibroids, and endometriosis. Every dish is designed to nourish the body and spirit, without compromising flavor or cultural connection.

The elephant symbolizes strength, unity, and compassion—all values that drive Neal & Nettie’s. My grandmother, Neal & Nettie’s daughter, was a potter and loved making elephants, which became a meaningful representation of our family’s legacy.
